Monika Voorhis joins the Solutions Architect team at XTM International
XTM International is happy to announce that Monika Voorhis was appointed as a Solutions Architect to promote and support the enterprise-grade translation management system, XTM in the USA. In her new role, she will provide tailored technology solutions to enterprise clients as well as pursuing pre- and post-sales activities in the region. We sat down with Monika to hear more about her experience, career choices and plans. Here’s what she shared with us.
How did you get started in the language industry?
Monika Voorhis: Since I can remember, I’ve always liked working with languages – whether it is my native Polish, or French and English – the two languages I studied as part of my major in Translation and Interpreting at the University of Warsaw. After receiving my M.A. in Applied Linguistics, I immediately jumped right into full-time translation work. And now I’m here!
How long have you been working in localization?
MV: It’s coming close to being 8 years – not including the 5 years I spent studying Applied Linguistics. After graduating, I worked as a marketing, IT and legal freelance translator and project manager for major international enterprise-level clients, had a full-time job as a localization compliance specialist and software tester, and finally made a sharp turn into localization sales and solutions management to help clients reach their business goals.
Why did you choose this career path?
MV: The plan to work in this industry was never set in stone. Initially, believe it or not, I wanted to become a commercial pilot. For a few years, I recreationally flew gliders and small planes and even obtained the PPL (Private Pilot) license as the first step in fulfilling my dream of soaring through the skies as a means of making a living. After graduating, however, I met my amazing husband and moved to the US, where I quickly realized that the localization market here is growing exponentially and that there is so much opportunity for me to grow as a language technology specialist. I couldn’t be happier with the career choices that led me to where I am today, especially if I get my adrenaline kick from skiing and hiking on weekends in the beautiful state of Colorado.
What do you find most interesting about localization?
MV: Two things: working with people from different cultures and having to constantly adapt and reinvent yourself. Only this way can you keep up with this dynamically developing industry.
MV: Having worked in so many different areas of localization made me realize that what was missing in my career advancement was technology. I have always enjoyed working directly with clients and helping them accomplish their business goals while making sure that their journey is as smooth as possible. Working towards clients’ goals is so much easier if the product you’re offering is as good as XTM. I have worked with many translation management systems (TMS) and CAT tool providers in the past, including laggy and infuriating cloud-based systems, and nothing comes even close to how flexible, granular and dependable XTM is. Last but not least, I am happy to be a part of a company that is partially based in Poland and employs so many Poles. Being able to occasionally communicate in my native language is always a bonus.
What do you like most about your current role?
MV: The people I work with on a daily basis are the true definition of what teamwork should be like. I am grateful for all the support they have shown me since joining XTM and I am looking forward to troubleshooting with them!
How do you see your future in localization?
MV: Hopefully, I will keep advancing in the technology realm. I am also considering going back to school to study Computational Linguistics to see where that journey takes me.
Thank you, Monika, for introducing yourself to XTM! We believe your genuine enthusiasm and vast industry experience will be invaluable in growing the US customer base.
